This Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF)-funded multicentre pragmatic, adaptive clinical trial compares the use of oral fosfomycin to standard-of-care antibiotics for children with multidrug-resistant urinary tract infections. Usually, multidrug-resistant urinary tract infections require treatment with prolonged antibiotics in children that often need to be given via a drip, requiring prolonged hospital stays. This trial aims to evaluate an affordable and tolerable antibiotic already frequently used ‘off label’ in children (‘fosfomycin’), to evaluate its safety, dosing, and efficacy for children with multidrug-resistant urinary tract infections.

The FOSUTI trial is led by our team at The University of Sydney, with recruitment across multiple tertiary hospitals in Australia – including Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick, Perth Children’s Hospital, Queensland Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne and the Children’s Hospital Westmead in Sydney.
